Netherland’s largest infrastructure project involves construction costs of EURO 1.1 billion. A new highway will connect the port of Rotterdam with the city. The challenge of the project is to construct a 40 meter deep ramp below sea level and to install the prefabricated tunnel elements over one of the busiest rivers in Europe and to connect them tightly against pressurized water.
Despite a high degree of digitalization in planning and a 4D BIM model, issue management and construction documentation on the site is carried out analogously by the construction supervisor. Holding daily insitu meetings are unavoidable at the present time.
We interviewed three colleagues from the local construction supervision and asked them what a construction documentation software must be able to do in order to be used in infrastructure projects of this size and complexity. The answer was: the problem with such software is that it is costly to update and time-consuming and therefore does not deliver the benefits.
